Kim Dority Presentation 10JAN2007

I had the opportunity to see Kim Dority (see Dority & Associates) present to the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. I arrived a little late and missed the first 15 minutes… I’ve been to a number of presentations for librarians over the last five years and found this one to be both entertaining and useful.

Kim focused on both strategic and tactical things that any librarian could use to increase the number of opportunities being generated in their life.

A few of her slides were right on point for both librarians and any professional:

“Build your portfolio” – become a network node, you can contribute with the knowledge that you have and the resources that you know you can exploit

“Build your community of colleagues” – librarians don’t do networking… but they do “I know how to do this, how can I help you?” Build relationships with others (associates, vendors, authors, speakers)

“Take charge of your learning” – multi-purpose your projects and assignments

I’m working on a link to Kim’s presentation and will post it here.

During the Q & A someone asked about pricing for information consulting… While Kim gave a range $35 – $100 per hour, I suggested value based pricing. To learn more about how to price a consulting project I suggest reading Million Dollar Consutling by Dr. Alan Weiss. You can get some insight on best pricing methods at the FAQ provided by Summit Consulting.

If you are interested in learning more about Kim’s thoughts you should read Rethinking Information Work.
