This whole concept is the antithesis of the zero-sum game concept. The more opportunities that are fostered the better for all of us. So, help when you can - wherever you can and the benefits will come - often in a way completely unexpected. <br /><br />The open source community is built on this as well. Many companies and jobs have resulted directly from these highly altruistic (and selfish - helps to scratch your own itch -> need) efforts.<br /><br />I really liked the <a href="http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/network/2006/09/20/eurooscon-glow-flow-show.html">presentation by Tor Norretranders</a> at EuroOscon 2006 who proposed an evolutionary biology theory behind open source (and this karma concept).
